Recover data from a crashed hard disk with Vista installed

I am sure that many of you have had this problem and are here because you need some help. These instructions are based on what I did to recover some photos from my brother’s computer, which had a corrupted MBR table. I decided to try the following idea. I am sure that there are many others out there. But here is another one.

If you have tried using the Vista DVD recovery console tools and have not been successful then try the following.

  1. You need an external hard disk with plenty of space depending on the files that you would like to recover, or a second hard disk inside your tower that you use as a back up and you have access too.
  2. Download the UBCD4win from here. Follow the instructions on creating the UBCD4win cd or dvd. "Remember you need XP Home or Pro to create the UBCD4win iso image".
  3. Boot your computer using the UBCD4win making sure that you have plugged your external hard disk.
  4. Use the file recovery utility that comes with UBCD42win.
  5. Do a search through your hard disk and or logical drives for the files you wish to recover.
  6. Copy and paste to your external hard disk.
  7. Well done, you are done :)

That is all you need to do. Next step is to reinstall vista again. Any question or suggestions just drop a line.

Good luck!!!
